FES Human Rights Award 2008

On December 12th, the annual award ceremony of Friedrich Ebert Foundation Human Rights Award took place in Berlin. The 2008 award war granted to the President of Belarus Journalists Association Jeanna Litvina.

The award was presented by the Foundation’s President Anke Fuchs. “Your strength, your courage and a way of constructive dialogue chosen by you at these difficult times serve as an example for many and inspire others” – said Mrs. Anke Fuchs at the ceremony speaking before numerous journalists, politicians and experts. This year, among the speakers there was the Prime-Minister of Brandenburg Land Matthias Plazek.

Heaving noted positive development in Belarus Mrs. Fuchs indicated that Friedrich Ebert Foundation stands ready to support with all available means the emerging positive trends in Belarus in cooperation both with state authorities and independent democratic partners.

The Human Rights Award, presented for the first time in 1994, dates back to the legacy of Karl and Ida Feist from Hamburg. The couple stipulated in their will that their fortune be administered by the Fund, which is to present a Human Rights Award once a year. Karl and Ida Feist actively supported the labour movement for many years. According to the donators, the Human Rights Award should be awarded to individuals or organisations who rendered outstanding services for human rights in the different parts of the world.
